Baking is a lot of fun, but it’s even more fun when you get to enjoy it with someone else... especially a tiny cute someone else. Before baking with kids I thought “this is gonna be really messy”. Then I remembered that even baking without kids is really messy. Well, at least for me it is. Don’t be afraid to dive in and get dirty, the chocolate will be the reward— along with the fun you’ll both have making it. Plus, just look at how cute those hands are! So let’s make chocolate cake together.

Begin by adding sugar to a bowl. (It helps if you measure and then let them pour)

Now for some flour.

Hershey’s cocoa powder. (this recipe comes from the back of the container)

Salt.

And stir it all up.

Either get out your hand mixer or dump it all into the bowl of a stand mixer.

Add two eggs (I crack them both into a cup and let her pour)

Milk (her hands are so cute it kills me)

Oil.

Vanilla.

Mix her up.

Pour in boiling water... don’t worry I didn’t let her pour it. (Jeremy and I like to use fresh coffee instead of water when we make it at home).

Prep two cake pans with spray and flour.

Roughly divide the batter between the two. Bake at 350° for 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Use this time to clean up. The good thing is, not only can kids make messes, they can also clean up.

For the frosting: start with melted butter.

Cocoa powder.

Mix.

You’ll need milk and powdered sugar. Add them alternating 1 cup of powdered sugar at a time, then a third of the milk until it’s all incorporated.

Taste it just to make sure it’s delicious.

Let your cakes cool for 10 minutes in the pans.

Then cool completely on wire racks. I know they’re ugly. I never pop them out well... but the icing will cover it.

Ice, stack, ice.

Decorate. She loves sprinkles.
